To provide you with an info of my background, I've practiced Kendo for 10+ years, did some Iaido in the past, recently started Iaido again a year ago. I'm pretty sure at this day and age of information era we question more than to blantly follow a random sempai on the internet who is suppressing the thirst of knowledge.Īnd I came up to a conclusion of this phenomenon, I thought, maybe if I should try it out and see what's what? A lot of us would think, yeah sure, why not try it, but first, why not ask the majority of people consisting Iaidokas around, say, the Iaido subreddit? But unfortunately, this subreddit is pretty closed without giving much information, giving out replies in a sense of "You must learn if from sensei, no questions asked" like some old ass Taichi master from China to sound like its cool. As I have said earlier a lot of my fellow Kendokas and Iaidokas joked that the wazas can be all learnt from videos.

I too have wondered if it's possible to learn Iaido from videos. With the abundance of information around us, it seems impossible not to try out learning Iaido from a Youtube channel.

There are a lot of books available, I heard that during the 80~90's in Japan it was common for high level senseis to document the movements of Iaido, hence we get a lot of quality videos of the sensei's movements. There is another reason that not a lot of Iaido dojos are available outside Japan, and the urge of learning can be a bit painful for the people who want to learn Iaido. As far as I know, HEMA practitioners are relying heavily on books, pictures and videos, any documentation that they get in their hands, which results in having confidence in their self-learning techniques. I would also carefully point out that a lot of Westerners are likely to believe Iaido can be self-taught, since there are a fair amount of people coming from HEMA who are interested in Iaido. I mean even when I was in the dojo, people always joked around like "you can literally learn the moves from home(if you have the sheer will of playing the video back and forth a hundred times)". In sight, Iaido does look like it could be learnt through videos and a quality amount of training.

Organically it unfolded over time and I found that teaching my students overseas via the internet worked. Initially I did not set out to teach anyone online. I had doubts when I first opened the school to online teaching.
